Vassar Farmerettes milk cows on the Vassar Farm during World War I. Help was scarce and Vassar students took on many chores at the college during the war years. According to the 1918 Vassarion, those working on the farm arose at 4:30 a.m. for two hours of work before breakfast, followed by four hours after breakfast and another two to four hours in the afternoon. They plowed (with a tractor and a two-horse plow), planted, weeded, raked and pitched hay, constructed fences, and milked.
