Winter Carnival
Winter Carnival

Vassar women in the early 20th century braved the biting cold that accompanies most Poughkeepsie winters for the annual Winter Carnival. This daylong event, held on Sunset Lake and Hill, joined faculty and students together for skiing, ice-skating, sledding, and other winter festivities. Classes competed against one another in relay games and sporting events, and, at the end of the day, the class with the most points was awarded the rose-and-gray Winter Carnival banner. The juniors took the banner in 1922, the Winter Carnival featured in the picture above.
