Women’s Rugby Takes Regional Title

Having won the Northeast Rugby Union Women’s Collegiate Division I title, the women’s rugby team is headed to Nationals in the spring. The Brewers compiled a sparkling 12-0 mark, conceding just four tries this fall. Junior Val Griffeth led the Brewers with 161 points. Junior Larkin Sealy finished with 16 tries for 80 points, and senior Julie Half added 15 tries for 75 points. In the playoffs Vassar defeated Radcliffe (45-0), Dartmouth (33-5), and Cornell (31-0). “The previous two years we’ve finished third in the Northeast, and it’s the hard work of all the previous players that laid the foundation for this success,” said head coach Tony Brown.

Women’s Tennis Team Wins NYSWCAA and UCAA Titles

The women’s tennis team dominated New York State competition in the fall. In October, the Brewers blew through the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association competition to take their first conference title.

The following week they won the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association’s 16-team draw. Junior Diya Uberoi, senior Alexis Neider, and junior Jessica Shofler won individual championships in the #2, #3, and #4 singles flights, respectively, while seniors Becky Weldon and Sarah Tighe made it to the #1 and #6 singles championship matches. Vassar swept the three doubles championships with wins at #1 by Shofler and Neider, #2 by Weldon and Tighe, and #3 by Uberoi and freshman Kathryn Robinette (pictured above). Weldon and Uberoi were named to the NYSWCAA and UCAA Singles All-Conference Team, while Neider and Shofler were named to the NYSWCAA and UCAA Doubles All-Conference Team. Also selected to the NYSWCAA squad was Neider (singles second team) and the doubles team of Weldon and Tighe (second team).

Vassar finished 8-1 in the fall season. Head coach Kathy Campbell, who was named NYSWCAA Coach of the Year, described the team’s season as “phenomenal” and noted that “winning the conference and states in the same year is pretty amazing.”

The most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll (Dec. 2002) lists Vassar as 22nd in the nation out of 350 Division III schools. In the Northeast region (110 teams), Vassar is ranked 6th.

Women’s Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, defeating Union before falling to top regional seed Nazareth. Several players had spectacular seasons, including UCAA All-Conference players in libero Emily Harris ’03, who broke the school record for digs, and junior hitter McKenzie Johnson, who led the team in kills and was named to the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association First Team. Junior setter Ashley Manlove and sophomore hitter Nani Loui also earned UCAA honors. Head Coach Jonathan Penn and Assistant Coach Antonia Sweet were named UCAA Coaching Staff of the Year. The team had all eight eligible athletes named to the UCAA All-Academic Team this fall.
