Sit Awhile

By Samantha Soper '91

Four years ago, Elizabeth Orton Davi ’61 and Freda Coffing Tschumy ’61 watched as their class centennial tree was removed from campus. (The trunk of the tree had rotted through.) Those same two classmates came together this April to witness its reincarnation — as a spectacular piece of sculpture. From the original tree, Tschumy, a Miami-based artist, created bronze casts of the branches and fashioned a bench out of its wood. Many members of the class contributed to this project, but it was Tschumy’s vision and talent that brought the ’61 tree back home. The new class of ’61 bench is located across from the class of ’61 stonewall at the juncture of the path from the Shakespeare Garden and Sunset Lake.
