Photo of Vassar Professor of Astronomy Maria Mitchell at a Solar Eclipse in 1869

This picture was taken in Burlington, Iowa, in 1869, the site of a solar eclipse. On the left, in the black dress is Vassar Professor of Astronomy Maria Mitchell. Inside the shed on the right, with his face turned away from the camera, is Dartmouth Professor of Astronomy Charles A. Young. The colleges renewed their partnership this summer as alumnae/i from Vassar and Dartmouth traveled together to Turkey. One of the highlights of the journey was witnessing a rare total solar eclipse.
