Back to College

By Kate Conlow ’09

In 1981, Mark Scheinberg '78 bought the Data Institute, a four-student vocational school located above a pizzeria in Hartford, Connecticut. By 1986, he moved the school into two Victorian mansions and then, in the early 1990s, he began working to turn it into a college. In 1999, the Data Institute became an accredited two-year institution and was renamed Goodwin College. Scheinberg has since given away all ownership of the college, but has stayed on as president. Today, Goodwin is a nonprofit, four-year college and has expanded to 800 acres on the banks of the Connecticut River. That expansion helps to accommodate the now 1,200 students who enroll in the college’s nursing, business, and human-services programs. — K.C.
