4th-ranked Men’s Volleyball Making Run at Molten Title

The men’s volleyball team reached fourth in the national ranking after a 10-2 start. Led by seniors Jesse Lam and Jeff Barr, the Brewers picked up where they left off in 2002, posting a stunning 3-0 win over then-fourth-ranked NYU, and taking a run against second-ranked Springfield.

Jeffrey Barr ‘03 goes for the spike in a game against Roger Williams University.

Barr, who is among the national leaders in hitting percentage and aces per game, set the school record for career digs in a 3-1 win over NJIT in February. Lam, too, has been torrid at the net, leading the team in kills per game. He and Barr have been chosen by the American Volleyball Coaches Association as national players of the week.

Vassar has games remaining against Springfield and NYU, before leaving for California in mid-March, where they will play third-ranked La Verne. They return to finish up their regular season at the end of March.

The Brewers will look to make some noise at the EIVA Championships, before hopefully qualifying for the Molten Championships.

Vassar Women’s Rugby Qualifies for Nationals and Will Host Bracket

Vassar will host Pool D of the Women’s Division I Collegiate Rugby Championship the weekend of April 19–20. Vassar will play Ohio State on Saturday, with the winner meeting the other side of the bracket winner to determine who advances to the final four. The Brewers emerged from the Northeast region as the top team after an impressive fall season. They went 12-0, and in the Northeast playoffs knocked off Radcliffe 45-0, last year’s champion Dartmouth 33-5, and Cornell 31-0.

Megan DeLong ’05 broke Vassar records in the 400-yard individual medley and in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events.

Women’s co-captain Julie Half ’03 played a huge role in the team’s success and is a vital link between the forwards and the backs. The scoring has been evenly spread and everybody has made significant contributions, but Half is the decision maker.

“I’m very excited that the players have earned this opportunity, and we want to make this weekend a great sporting occasion,” said head coach Tony Brown. “I hope that the student body, friends, family, and alumnae/i make the effort to come to the game and give us a real home-field advantage.” The women’s team will prepare for their national championships by playing three games in England prior to the Sweet 16 weekend.
