The Photographers

Ben Rutkowski ’09

By Vassar Quarterly

It seemed almost unbefitting to come back as an “alum photographer”—at the time I was only a few months removed from being a Vassar student and a Vassar College Relations photographer. I still knew a large portion of the student population, and trying to get candid shots as a “fly on the wall” was nearly impossible. But I appreciated the fluidity of roles as student, faculty, employee and alumnus. It really is a self-sufficient community in many ways.

Ben Rutkowski, a working cinematographer and assistant cameraman in New York City, still occasionally works for Vassar as a photographer and videographer. The films he made while at Vassar have won several awards and have placed in national and international film festivals. He will be attending NYU Tisch School of the Arts for his M.F.A. in directing and cinematography starting this fall.
