Vassar Radio Hits the Web-Waves

Thanks to a small investment in a server, WVKR 91.3 FM, the Vassar College radio station, can now broadcast over the Internet as well as over the airwaves.

According to station manager Colin Crowley ’01, the new technology will allow the station to reach “anybody who wants to listen.” All that is needed is access to the station’s Website at http://wvkr.vassar.edu and the software programs Real Audio or Windows Media Player.

An online presence is part of a nationwide trend in college radio. From Boston College to San Jose State University, radio stations have begun to connect with an
international audience that is looking for unique programming not found on most commercial stations.

And it hasn’t taken much time for long-distance listeners to find WVKR online. D.B. Brown’s “The Rag Shop,” one of the long-est running and most popular shows on WVKR, recently received e-mailed requests from listeners in Indiana and Sweden.
